The birth of the popular striped “GUE$$” tee (2016)
A$AP Rocky has been a colossal fashion figure in the last decade since his rise to prominence through the late A$AP Yam’s tumblr account. He is an avid-attendee of Fashion Week in Paris & New York, and has gained notoriety for his impeccable wardrobe — one that is comprised of the work of Rick Owens, Valentino & similar fashion elites. In 2016, Rocky would take his role in the fashion realm a step further by becoming the face of the Dior Homme collection and creating a collaborative line with Guess.
The ‘𝘈𝘛.𝘓𝘖𝘕𝘎.𝘓𝘈𝘚𝘛.𝘈$𝘈𝘗 ’ artist’s 2016 collaboration with Guess Originals would yield the sought-after striped “GUE$$” tee that has became a staple streetwear piece in the last few years. Much like the tee shirt, the entire collection reeks of a nostalgic 90’s theme from the boroughs of NYC. Rocky, from Harlem himself, wanted to encapsulate the broad influence that Guess played on hiphop and streetwear culture in NYC in the 90’s. The collection is loaded with vintage washed denim looks that one would expect from Guess, paired with oddly satisfying retro colorways.
The collection was debuted in a fully interactive installation in NYC that was designed by AWGE (A$AP’s creative alias), and recreates a typical 90’s basement equipped with Nintendos and all. In addition to him teaming up with Paul Marciano at Guess, Flacko has also created pieces with his mentor and friend Raf Simons, as well as Marc Jacobs.
